    1. Cut mitres at internal corners at 45°. Use a mitre box or a sliding compound mitre saw. Internal corners on a standard square room take a 45° cut on each piece, meeting flush. MDF scotia cuts cleanly with a fine-tooth blade.

    2. Cut external corners at 45° the opposite way, so the two pieces meet with the outside faces flush.

    3. Apply a bead of grab adhesive (such as Gorilla Grab Adhesive) to the rear face of the scotia. Press firmly against the skirting - not the flooring beneath.

    4. Never nail or pin scotia through the floor itself. Scotia sits on top of the flooring's expansion gap; pinning it through the floor locks the floor in place and causes lifting, cupping or joint failure over the seasons. Fix to the skirting only.

    5. Mask and finish. Masking tape on the flooring line gives a clean edge. Our colour-matched scotia is pre-finished, so most installations need no painting - just press into place for an instant neat finish.

Scotia beading works with all our floated flooring ranges - see the laminate flooring, engineered wood, solid wood and LVT hubs for compatible floors.

Is scotia the same as quadrant?

No - they're different profiles. Scotia has a concave (inward-curved) cross-section designed to meet flush against the skirting. Quadrant has a convex quarter-circle profile and sits flatter against the floor. Scotia gives a softer, shadow-gap finish; quadrant gives a simpler flat look. Choose scotia for most laminate and engineered floors - it looks more refined against standard skirting.

Can I paint scotia beading to match my skirting?

Yes. Our MDF scotia can be painted if you want a custom colour or an exact match with your skirting. Lightly sand the surface with 180-grit sandpaper, apply an MDF primer to seal the edges, then finish with two coats of satin or eggshell woodwork paint — allowing 24 hours between coats. That said, with 17 pre-finished colour options available, most customers find a close match straight out of the box.
