How to lay carpet underlay?
Make sure you fit the underlay with the rubber facing the floor and the backing paper up. You’ll want to roll out a few metres of underlay and position it so that it is in the corner of the room.
Roll the underlay out to the opposite side of the room and cut it so that it fits up against the edge of the gripper rod there. It may be easier to overlap the underlay using the gripper rods and then trim the excess off when you’re done. You can fix the underlay to the floor using staples or tacks. All you need to do is continue laying strips in the same way until the floor is complete.
Different Types Of Underlay
Not all types of carpet need underlay, but many of them do. There are a few main different types of underlay:
- Sponge rubber underlay - very common. Synthetic rubber filled with air bubbles and attached to a backing paper in a waffle pattern. Can be purchased in numerous thicknesses which normally varies the price. This type of underlay tends to suit rooms with lower foot traffic.
- PU foam underlay - made from recycled furniture foam. Comfortable and lightweight. Hardwearing, suitable for heavy foot traffic. Tends to be more comfortable underfoot than sponge rubber underlay.
