Criticism for businesses refusing Royal Wedding holiday (14/03/11)
14 March 2011
The GMB union has criticised employers for refusing to give their staff the Royal Wedding day as an additional holiday to enjoy. The union has “named and shamed” two companies that consider 29th April 2011, the day of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding as a normal working day.
Many companies feel the same way about this arrangement; however the ones the union broadcasted were Lancashire flooring firm Interfloor and concrete product manufacturer CPM.
Even though the Government has declared the wedding date as a bank holiday, there is no law to guarantee staff time off due to the special event, staff are left with a dilemma as the must abide by their employment contracts.
Managing Director of Remland Carpets, Mr Trevor Ballard has commented “we are all going to have the day off to celebrate the Royal Wedding; there is no surprise that all the staff are very pleased about this.”
