Choosing The Perfect Flooring For Your New Bathroom
13 January 2014
Giving the bathroom a new look can be a big – and expensive – job. When you do it, you want to make sure that the finish will last for as possible, and stay looking nearly new as well. After spending money on new fixtures and fittings (including that new corner bath you’ve been hankering after), you want to make sure that the finish looks as good as possible.
There are walls, ceilings and floors to consider, and in a bathroom you can’t just use the same paint you would in a bedroom.
The most important thing to consider in the bathroom is its pretty unique purpose. A bathroom is full of things which make it hot and steamy. The walls are subject to a lot of moisture. Wallpaper will peel, and the wrong kind of paints will flake away.
And then there’s the floor to think about. Rubber tiles, ceramic, stone or bathroom vinyl flooring – there is a lot of choice out there but not all types will suit the purpose.
In a bathroom you might want comfort, but you will need a non-slip surface which is easy to clean, hygienic, and hard wearing. No one wants to risk picking up a fungal infection in their own bathroom.
While a carpet might be the softest and warmest flooring to have under foot, in the steamy conditions of a post-shower bathroom, they will begin to look a little worse for wear. The pile will hold any smells – good and bad. The fabric itself can begin to rot. Basically, save your carpets for bedrooms and living rooms and leave the bathroom to more suitable flooring.
Stone flooring is a luxurious option, but it can feel very cold (especially in winter), as well as being quite pricey. Most stone is porous and therefore will need sealing. Even then it can stain easily, so any spills will need to be cleaned up immediately, and you’ll have to keep on top of the housework. If you do choose stone flooring, steer clear of anything polished or marble. They will be very slippery, especially when wet, which could lead to some very painful experiences.
Real wood can warp in the moist conditions, and so if you want wooden flooring in your bathroom, you will have to consider alternative options.
Vinyl flooring can be used in bathrooms because it fulfils all of the criteria.
- Bathroom vinyl flooring is:
- Non-slip
- Hygienic
- Hard wearing
- Easy to clean
Whether you’re replacing a floor, or refitting the whole room, bathroom vinyl flooring is a wise choice. It comes in a range of colours, patterns, and styles to suit any room.
If you like the look of stone, but not the cold feeling underfoot (or the cost), then you can look for vinyl alternatives. There are plenty of stone effects available which will suit any budget. You can also buy vinyl tiles or sheeting which looks like wood. As it is specifically designed for use in bathrooms, it will last longer than the real thing, and again, will often be cheaper.
Bathroom vinyl flooring is easy to lay, and cheaper than some of the suitable counterparts. One of its main benefits is that to clean it just needs a quick mop. If there is a lot of water on the floor, make sure you dry it off a bit to avoid any warping or water marks which can occur when left to dry naturally.
