Choosing Flooring For Your Child’s Bedroom
3 February 2014
Sometimes children just don’t want to go to bed. It’s something that, as exhausted adults, is little hard to picture, but when you’re three you seem to have heaps of energy and it just doesn’t run out in time for bed.
Making your child’s bedroom more appealing can be a great way to convince them to spend more time in there and less time getting under mummy and daddy’s feet. Bed time is never easy to come to terms with, but if you love your room maybe it won’t be so bad.
There isn’t much point spending a lot on beautiful wallpaper, because when you have small children the possibility of drawing on walls is never very far away.
Instead, think about hardwearing and cost effective updates which will also add personality and appeal to a room. Cost is a big factor when the floor is going to go through a lot – just like wall papers and paints there isn’t a lot of point spending a small fortune on something which won’t last forever. Carpet can help dampen sound when the little ones start walking. It will also add warmth and comfort. If your child happens to fall over they’ll have a soft landing. Some carpets can be expensive, so look around and see what’s available within your price bracket before making any decisions.
Cheap vinyl flooring is also a very good choice. While it doesn’t feel as warm as carpet, it will be easy to clean and really hard wearing. You can lay a thick cushioned underlay in case of bumps, and it will stay looking good for a lot longer than carpet.
Pick brighter colours or prints for children. Some parents might try and avoid child specific decoration, but the truth is when they get older they almost certainly won’t want to keep the decoration their parents picked when they were young. And there is likely to be a bit of wear and tear showing by then as well.
If your decoration is only going to last a few years there is no harm taking some advice from your two year old. If they want a yellow wall and a carpet with ducks on it and it’s within your budget then let them have it. They will be far happier in a room that they’ve had some say in than one which is decorated for an adult.
Cheap vinyl flooring is available in a wide range of colours and patterns to suit all budgets. If you can’t find exactly what you’re looking for it’s possible to make your own mosaic style flooring using vinyl flooring tiles. These work especially well in a child’s room because if one gets damaged you can remove that tile and replace it rather than having to change the whole floor.
Dark colours will hide stains better than light ones, while neutral tones might compliment a wider range of wall coverings. The added benefit of a neutral or wood effect cheap vinyl flooring is that should it last until the child is older you won’t need to change the floors when you
The choices are more or less unlimited but
cheap vinyl flooring will cope well with all the spills, stains and general rigours a toddler is likely to put it through.
We’ll leave you with this list of things to consider when picking a floor covering for a child’s bedroom. Remember, the last one is probably the most important.
1. Is it easy to clean?
2. Is it hard wearing?
3. Is it water resistant?
4. Will it help dampen sound or add insulation?
5. Do they like it?
