Installation
Laying hardboard on top of wooden floors, commonly floorboards, provides a smooth, flat subfloor for some types of new floor covering. Hardboard is often used before laying carpet, sheet vinyl, and soft tiles such as cork, carpet and vinyl. Here is our guide to laying your hardboard:
1. Lay the boards smooth side up in the opposite direction to the floor boards and stagger the joints as you go.
2. Stapling is the quickest way to secure hardboard if you have an electric staple gun although 15-20mm ring shank nails can be equally efficient. Fix at 15cm intervals.
3. Butt the second board tightly up against the first sheet. As you place each board keep them tight together and as neatly aligned as possible.
4. Work across the room until only the edge gaps are left.
5. Measure and cut pieces for the edges. To cut a straight line in hardboard, use a steel rule and a craft knife. Score the smooth side of the board.
6. Turn the board over, lay the steel rule along the scored line and bend the board up and separate with a craft knife. Fill in all the edges on the floor with cut pieces as required.
Sustainability
Hardboard, also called High-Density Fiberboard (HDF), is made with exploded wood fibers salvaged from wood chips and shavings. This engineered wood is an excellent way to recycle wood waste collected from sawmills into a reasonably strong and affordable material. Naturally occurring lignin from the wood fibres is utilised to bond the boards together and as such hardboard is an almost unrivalled environmentally friendly product.
